Catechesis

Fr. Matthew Brown directs the program of catechesis at St. Mary Magdalen. To inquire about becoming Orthodox, come and see our parish during the Divine Liturgy on Sundays or at our other services.

During Lent of 2025, Dr. Crina Gschwandtner will teach a series called “The Lessons of Lent” to the catechumens, inquirers, and life-long learners of St. Mary Magdalen. The schedule can be found below. The first session is at 6:30 PM on February 26, 2025. Once Lent begins, the catechesis will begin after the conclusion of the Presanctified Liturgy on Wednesdays.

The catechumenate is the period of betrothal to the Church, in which the aspiring Christian prepares for baptism and chrismation into the Christ’s body through repentance—the living of a better life—and learning. Lasting three years in the early Church, the catechumenate can last just one year, a couple years, or longer, depending on the life of the catechumen and the instruction of the Bishop or Priest responsible for them, and depending on their familiarity with Orthodoxy and other Christian traditions.
